Project Three: Type Specimen Poster
Part 1: Initial Wireframes
Here are some of my initial wireframes. I played around with hierarchy and figuring out what’s the most important element I want someone to look at. I also played around with what to include in the background.
Part 2: Digital Wireframes
Here are some of my digital wireframes. When I converted some of my initial sketches to digital wireframes I realized that my hierarchy wasn’t that clear. For example, some of the headings on my initial sketches weren’t that big and I realized I needed to play more with scale. Thus, on the digital wireframe on the right I increased the scale of 1757 to make sure that its clear where the entry point to the poster is.
I continued to play around with scale of different elements and also where to place the character set, and paragraph about the font on the poster. This was the final poster I came up with:
I decided to place the character set within the large letter B and decided to use the letters O and T as connectors for a viewer to transition from one set of characters to another. I also had the uppercase letters on the larger circle of the B and the lowercase letters on the smaller circle of the B to emphasize the differences between the uppercase and lowercase characters. Also, I wanted to showcase the contrast between italics vs bold characters in Baskerville.
Overall, my final poster improved greatly on the hierarchy problems of my initial sketches and initial digital wireframes. My final poster has a clear hierarchy of what’s the most important elements which are 1) large B, 2) 1757, and 3) John Baskerville. In the final critique, I received some great feedback on what to improve on my poster if I had more time. One feedback I received was that placing characters in the large B left the viewer feeling trapped within each of those sections so it was hard for them to look at the other places on the poster. This is something I will keep in mind and try to avoid in future projects.
