Event Series Posters

Introduction

In this project I created a series of three event posters for three different events within a single arts festival. I choose to create posters for three different concerts for a music summertime music festival in my hometown. The posters were to use common design elements in order to unite the series and relate to each other while each still having a distinctive design. To create these posters, I had to take into consideration topics we focused on before such as hierarchy, Gestalt principals and, typographic choices as well as introducing expression. Using the pen tool in Adobe illustrator allowed me to create a communicative and distinct illustration for each poster. I had to find the balance between form and function to express the necessary information of the concert posters in a well designed manner.

Feedback

During the critique I received a lot of good feedback from my peers. There were three main topics of critique that mot of the comments fit into, organization, illustrations, and text choices. In my initial posters my blocks of text were seemingly messily placed and scattered. In further itterations I worked on grouping text together in a way that resembles a “typical” event poster. The main point of feedback I got about my illustrations was that they should be more linked to the individual artists and to possibly experiment with different images or forms of abstraction. This inspired me to create individualized names of the artists for each poster as well as a new more unique image for the Beach Boys concert. In regards to my text choices I needed to work on my use of transparency and ensure that contrast is at the correct levels to allow for readability.

Further Itterations

I received more feedback on these posters above — hierarchy was improved, but there was still more to do with the illustrations and variation to allow each poster to be individual.

Next I added more unique features for each band using illustrations, as well as played around with a grid to improve the layout of information.

Towards the end I had two slight variations for each poster in locations of my text groups to choose from.

Final Pieces

Reflect

In working on this project, I found working with illustrations as well as color to be a bit of a challenge. It was hard for me to come up with a poster design from scratch at the start of the project, leading to rather non-unique posters for the interim critique. Afterwards, in experimenting more with the pen tool I was able to feel more comfortable with creating illustrations for the posters. I also found that grouping the text together helped reinforce the idea that these were event posters.

In my next project I want to work more in the planning and initial sketching phase of the project so that I can focus on more of the details before the first critique.
