Project 4 Documentation
3/28/19
For project 4, I created series of music festival posters. Main concept of the music festival is nature, which I tried to express in different ways in the posters. The highlight of the posters are the artists rather than the title of the music festival because the viewers care more about the artists rather than the title of the festivals.
Initial sketches
I had to spend very long time thinking about initial ideas because I did not have a solid idea that I wanted to create posters on. So to get more ideas on the way, I decided to draw some posters, thinking about illustration, background, and placement.
Another idea that came to my mind was theme-specific music festival, and I created multiple versions of posters while testing different size and placement of text, illustration, and outline.
After playing around with different concepts, I chose the final theme “nature”, and drew basic outline of the posters without detail. The outlines are cloud, water, and a tree, working as borders.
Digital iteration
As I was working digitally, there were many changes during the process. I re-drew the outlines many times, and also had to decide how many and which elements I will use to create the posters as a single series. I realized that the outline of the cloud and water are too big for the amount of information I was going to deliver. Also to keep it aligned with the tree, I decreased the size and added illustrations at the bottom to keep the posters consistent in composition.
Final Product
Reflect
I feel like there was a big room for improvement for this project compared to previous ones. To make the posters as a series, I focused too much on the visual aspect of the poster, similarity of typeface, outline, and grid. More subtle aspects such as not using straight lines, using elements from nature as themes, and casual typeface and illustration for hip hop festivals. If I did not focus too much on similarity but explored a little more, the posters would have been much more effective in delivering my intention and visually satisfying.
