The design challenge

How can we bridge the gap between traditional paper school books and new digital media?

With a team of 4, we set out to do user research, contact potential stakeholders, conceptualize, set up requirements, prototype, test and iterate.

Our target group were primary school students learning for their calculation test that has to be taken in the 8th grade.

My contributions to this project were mainly conceptualize, perform user research, gather feedback from stakeholders, and to create the dashboard for teachers (below). Collaboration and hosted design critiques however, made this a team effort, and our initial fixed roles appeared very flexible.

The concept

The final result was the creation of Check Mate, a mobile app concept:
Students can use this app to scan assignments out of the paper book. When doing so, they are provided with additional explanation and tools to practice the scanned subject within the app.

When a student scans this code, he or she is directed to the subject within the app. The student will then be able to:

  • access additional interactive content that explains the subject;
  • practice the subject using interactive assigments
  • track their progress and share it with their teacher

The dashboard for teachers

Teachers are able to view the following information:

  • An overview of how all classes compare to eachother;
  • The performance per class, with a ‘watchlist’ for students that need extra attention, the best performers, the performance per subject and graphs showing the amount of tests taken;
  • A breakdown of the performance per subject, showing attempts taken, average scores and graphs showing progress over time.
