Improving Overall Communication Skills

Many people are on completely different levels in terms of how well they can speak, connect, and generally socialize with other people. For extroverts, socializing comes naturally as they love to speak and outwardly express themselves. As for introverts, it can be the other way around as they naturally tend to be more quiet and soft-spoken than others.

I recently read a blog on medium titled “The Introvert’s Guide to Sharpening Communication Skills” by Rebel.com. This blog mainly describes how to communicate with others better whether you tend to be introverted, shy, or a little antisocial. The main piece of information I learned from the blog is when the author states one of his blog points as to “Focus on Your Strengths and Flaunt Them” (Rebel.com, 2016).When communicating with someone, demonstrating what you excel at can make a very good impression whether your strength is speaking, actively listening, or even telling light jokes. “ Good communication is all about exchange: both you and your conversation partner(s) are bringing something to the table” (Rebel.com, 2016). In other words, everyone can always have something to add to a conversation.

The topic of this blog resonates with me because I am naturally an introverted person. When it comes to publicly speaking, I usually don’t have a problem speaking out in front of people when giving a speech or presentation. However, my skill of small-talk has always been lacking in terms of strength. I have always been soft-spoken and usually laid back. After reading this blog and its suggestion of sticking to my strengths, I thought about my skill of actively listening to people when I have a conversation. I have always seemed to excel at that and recently when I have conversations with friends and other colleagues, I use that strength to make sure I understand what is being said and then adding my thoughts to our topic.
