Types of Communication
Communication does not simply mean to just speak to someone, especially in the workplace. There are many ways people signal each other whether it be conversation or any type of body response. In order to broaden my research on the topic of communication skills, I visited different blog posts by other users to get diverse information.
My fellow classmate James explains in his blog post, “There’s More to Communication Than One Might Think”, the different ways to connect with others. He explains “Communication is not limited to the action of speaking with others. There are plenty of ways to communicate besides actual face to face conversation. Whether it be email, blogging, social media, phone calls the list could go on forever. There is one key component to them all, which is one person is getting in contact with another to discuss something or communicate a message” (Stenzel, 2017). James’ thoughts on the ways of connecting with others are very important considering how modern society now leans towards the internet and social media. For example, if you don’t have the time to meet and discuss a topic with a colleague, there’s always another option whether it be a social media platform, email, or text.
I have been able to incorporate some of James’ ideas into ways to communicate with my own group in my Organizational Behavior class. One instance was when we had to put together a group paper describing each of our characteristics, but we had conflict withing our schedules that would prevent us from meeting in person with each other. However, we were able to still communicate by group text which would allows us to work together on the paper in the same document online using google docs. Our group was very successful on the paper as well. So it should not matter the specific way one connect with others, as long as both parties are willing to actively listen and respond to achieve the goal.
