Elevate Your Doctoral Training and Maximise Your Potential

Ph.D. study is one the most intellectually demanding but potentially rewarding opportunities of a life time. These programs are offered by almost every University across the world and many Ph.D. experiences are exceptional. This is not only because the learning achieved greatly increases a candidates subject knowledge, but because the experience radically alters the very way “PhDs” interpret and interact with their future lived reality. Knowledge is power, and Ph.D. level knowledge can be self realising and genuinely world changing.

Despite the potentials however, many Ph.D. students find themselves without the support they ideally wanted, or feel they need to maximise the potential of their often very expensive enrolments in university programs through additional support.

For many the reality of doctoral study is isolating and lacks the intellectually in-depth, inter-subjective, knowledge development they had hoped for…

Supervisors are busy and unresponsive (sometimes for good reasons) and often lack the mentoring skills that are needed to support academic parentships. The reality is that such skills are not well prized or developed by many universities and getting effective guidance can be difficult. As such, students often feel they are left to learn themselves, to a degree that transcends the healthy expectations of growing autonomy. Therefore, many come to feel disconnected and unsupported: in some cases they conclude that the experience has not provided the level and depth of intellectual development for which they had hoped. Withdrawal is the biggest reason for PhD non-completion.

As a response to above realities, CATALN offers a range of support options for current PhD students seeking additional supervision and support from outside of the institution in which they are enrolled.

PhD students of all social science and humanities subjects, as well as inter- and transdisciplinary research programs — particularly those aligned to our core reason for being — are eligible to apply to be a CATLAN Associate Ph.D. Candidate.

CATLAN focuses on place-based intellectual development, but uses this knowledge to create intellectually close but physically distance learning relationships.

If you are accepted as an Associate PhD Candidate, you can agree a specific package of support with a relevant supervisor. Options for this support include:

  • Basic academic proof reading of drafts written as essays, upgrade papers, as well as part and full drafts of your thesis submissions.
  • Intellectual support to compliment discussion with your primary supervision team at any stage of your work: for example, developing a literature review, building an appropiate methodology, selecting and carrying out data generation and analysis.

There is no tuition fee to be paid but students renumerate CATLAN for supervision on the basis of an hourly rate, depending on the intellectual depth of the support required.
