Most employees desire challenging and meaningful work. They wish to acquire knowledge, evolve, and contribute to the success of their organizations. It is for this reason that it is crucial for employers to assist employees in developing their skills and give them the autonomy needed to make decisions that affect their work. Not only will this increase retention and keep employees happy, but it will also build a skilled team of people.

Here are 3 tips an employer can follow in order to promote employees’ professional development:

1. Assign new projects or responsibilities

Provide employees with the chance in developing their own opportunities. Allow them to “fail” and learn from their “mistakes”. This approach provides a huge learning opportunity for innovation and professional development.

2. Share the knowledge

Arrange monthly informal meetings with your team where you teach employees a new skill, either a hard skill or a soft skill, and allow them to express their own opinions and share their own knowledge with the rest of the team. Employees will certainly appreciate the opportunity to learn and diversify their competencies.

3. Attend industry events

Allow employees to attend industry events with the purpose of learning best practices that they can apply in their own jobs. Since industries are constantly evolving and move at a fast pace, employees need to keep pace with the latest knowledge and tools in order to stay relevant and at the top of their game.
