As with any new relationship, a clear set of expectations is paramount to a successful partnership. Working with Recruiters as a candidate or company client should most of all be just that: a partnership. A fruitful collaboration of mutual investment. The somewhat sticky and distasteful issue of the Recruiter’s commission muddies the waters but should nevertheless not impinge on this crucial brokerage service being effective.

The best Sales people are those with sincerity and an authentic interest in the customer, we don’t buy from people we don’t trust or believe. The first sign you are working with a good recruiter should be the obvious:

They Like People. They have a deep, genuine interest and ask open ended questions about your requirements, your motivation for the role and your culture and needs. As a company or candidate, you want to feel that the Recruiter has a solid, all round feel and knowledge base for who you are and what you can do, to be sure they are discussing and pitching you correctly.

For Candidates this is so they can truly get the best job for you. A life altering game changer since we spend more than half of waking life at work.

For company clients this is so you can be sure they attract the best suited candidates for your work place which translates into higher employee retention rate and ultimately efficient, high production and/or Sales growth in revenue.

Transparency is another key indicator of the skilled Recruiter. Professionals lead busy lives juggling both personal commitments and work obligations, honest conversation and clear parameters from the outset means less wasting of time. That valuable and costly commodity which is our time, time spent in pointless interviews or reading pointless profiles. The CV and profile needs to be on the mark, the money needs to be a fit both ways and from the very beginning.

Feedback — Communication. As Recruiters we often hear candidates complain that after they send in their CV or after the interview its radio silence and no-one gets in touch with feedback. If there is any contact it’s a vacuous two-line email with no meaningful feedback. Likewise, company clients do not often get feedback from Recruiters when in fact this is very valuable as it will give them a market view of how they are perceived.

Along the process of the recruitment drive there needs to be a joined up, almost seamless communication flow with the Recruiter as the middle man and broker of this exchange.

In conclusion you know you are in good hands when your Recruiter delivers you accurate profiles of jobs or candidates, whichever the case and the interview and information provided matches the interview experience. An efficient partner, your Recruiter will be your sounding board and companion through the process and becomes someone who instinctively knows the right fit for you.
