The shoes just didn’t match, they never matched. They continued to be problematic despite having been deliberated over in several stages.

On first walking past the shoe shop and taking a cursory glance at the window display it had been love at first sight. Love that was put on hold because time was pressing and shoes were not top of the agenda.

Then the shoes had started making daydream appearances at unwelcome moments; during work meetings, important phone calls, chats with friends. They weren’t giving up that easily.

The next wander near the shoes ended up in the shop, holding the shoes. They were nice, visually ideal; teal suede heeled brogues with leather detailing in a plumby burgundy, and smelled incredible. Examining the sole had revealed the price and they were placed back on the shelf.

The shoes however, wouldn’t let that be. So the final visit built up to the trying on. They looked even better as a pair and that was before they were actually on feet. Wearing them was perfection, snug yet with wiggle room — you could wear them all day. There had never been a superior pair of shoes. The decision was made.

Boxed up with tissue paper, the receipt tucked out of sight, finished with a bow and slipped into a presentation bag, it was all justified. They were just waiting for their moment…
