Epson releases new printer firmware versions from time to time, and there are times when they can automatically update your printer without your knowledge due to Epson’s auto-update feature. If not turned off, Epson can make changes to your printer’s firmware without needing your consent.

This feature can sometimes do more harm than good, particularly if you use remanufactured Epson printer ink cartridges. You may wake up one day wanting to use your printer, only to discover that the off-brand printer ink cartridges you have installed are no longer recognized by your printer.

Turning off your printer’s automatic update setting is the most effective way to protect your off-brand cartridges from future Epson firmware updates. If you disable Epson firmware update feature on your printer, it will prevent updates from automatically downloading to your printer, and your printer will now have to ask for your approval before having to download any updates in the future. This lets you keep printing with your compatible cartridges and also gives you full control over future updates.

Parting Words

Since you never know when a printer manufacturer will release a new printer firmware update, we recommend that you disable Epson firmware update feature as soon as you have the chance.

As was already said, Epson's automatic firmware updates could cause problems for printers that use ink cartridges from companies other than Epson. Still, you can avoid a major hassle by simply turning the auto-update feature off. Because of this, it is very important that you set up your printer the right way so that it can meet your printing needs.

If your Epson printer’s firmware has already been updated to the most recent firmware version, you have the choice to roll it back or downgrade your printer’s firmware to a previous version that is compatible with third-party ink cartridges.
