COVID-19 has put technology at the heart of many companies. Consumer behavior has shifted dramatically since the past few months and more transactions are being carried out online. While the pandemic has brought financial and operational challenges to all markets, technology proves that growth is still possible during times of crisis.

Founded in 2010, Gojek’s mission is to remove life’s daily frictions by connecting consumers to the best providers of goods and services in the market, with a focus on creating impact at scale. This mission and purpose have become even more crucial in today’s times. Gojek now operates in five Southeast Asian countries, and as of June 2020, Gojek’s application and its ecosystem have been downloaded 190 million times by users across Southeast Asia.

Importantly, Gojek is also committed to being a growth partner for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by providing inclusive and comprehensive solutions to help them stay resilient and grow across all circumstances. This is necessary to keep economies moving amidst the pandemic and beyond, with small businesses forming the backbone of many communities within our region. Since the start of the pandemic, Gojek has helped more than 120,000 merchants migrate online.

None of this impact would be possible without the high-quality talent at Gojek. With the rapid growth of the digital economy and the importance of digital services here to stay, we must continue to keep up with the growing demand for great tech talent in order to continue creating a long term impact.

With many markets and industries in our region still facing a tech talent gap, we need to collaborate as an ecosystem to strengthen our capabilities. Therefore, collaboration amongst the private and public sectors, as well as academia, is critical to speed up digital development.

GoAcademy — Gojek’s talent incubator — is our solution to fill this gap in Indonesia. Through this, we are collaborating with several parties such as the Faculty of Computer Science, University of Indonesia (Fasilkom UI) on programs such as COMPFEST, to produce more world-class tech talent in Indonesia.

Gojek has supported COMPFEST for three years, and this year we took part in the training on software engineering and user experience. By supporting this training, Gojek aimed to develop the skills of more than 8,000 tech students across Indonesia.

In order to enable more inclusive growth across the tech ecosystem, we are also collaborating with Indonesia’s women in the tech community. Due to the pandemic, we are now migrating all of our programs online through #LearnAtHome with GoAcademy. We hope to reach as many people as possible and create more learning opportunities for all.
