Technology enhances every aspect of human life, one of them is love. It changes the way humans find love from the traditional way to a more modern way. In the past, people usually searched for partners in real-life places, like in the working place, bar, etc. Usually, people are introduced by their friends, then a blind date. We know that modern human prefers something practical and quick. So, dating apps accommodate it with a more timesaving convenience.

What is a dating app?

An application that helps assist dating on a technological level. You can solve your dating problem with the literal palm of your hand and smartphone. Available and scalable for everyone. Usable during relax time. Instant and timesaving. Usually gamified with interactive and entertaining ways.

These are the main features of the dating app :

Access Control

Besides the essentially instant log in through other social media accounts, most dating apps can track our data in our social media to show relevant people. For example, “Tinder” can track our interest in Instagram, by checking what kind of category that we like or follow.

The registration process on most of them allows the culling of catfishers and makes sure that users are the real deal. Sometimes, catfishers even start doing their dirty job as “someone-else-with-opposite-gender” to get private part pics, otherwise, they can’t get anything.

Geolocation

A dating app connects users all around through online means. For the convenience of users, location permissions are a must. It uses the GPS built-in your devices. Usually, dating apps show people nearby because it’s more relevant to us — so that we can easily meet said, people. If you find the people near your location are too annoying and irritating, just hop on the international matches and find your long-distance bae instead — After all, don’t people love exotic things?

Geolocation can collaborate with the “swiping” method. Swiping makes it more secure. You need to swipe each other to chat. It prevents anonymous users from sending annoying texts or pictures. Some dating apps use “show people nearby” then let them chat freely without boundaries.

Message

Communication is always an important part of human relationships. After a match, we can chat to know each other until we share phone numbers, then meet up to take it to the next level. It includes text, audio, photo, video, gif, and stickers. It also includes phone calls and video calls. But, it’s a must to make sure those features are not annoying users — A mute feature could do wonders.

So are you curious about the technology behind those dating apps? How on earth can a bunch of codes help you find a relevant partner? Do they track your data? How can they take note of the patterns of our users so that they matched with another user?

Matching algorithm.

A matching algorithm is an algorithm that compares the user data & usage with others.

Tinder uses a score of attractiveness. It counts how many people swipe our profile right. Then, it shows our profile to other users with similar scores. Meanwhile, OkCupid uses compatibility by filling questionnaires. Then, it counts the percentage of compatibility of our results with others.

There is one algorithm that is used by almost all dating apps. It’s called Collaborative Filtering. It powers our social media feeds, our browser searches, and recommendation in other applications.

Collaborative filtering in dating means that the earliest and most numerous users of the app have outsize influence on the profiles later users see. Some early user says she likes (by swiping right on) some other active dating app user. Then that same early user says she doesn’t like (by swiping left on) a Jewish user’s profile, for whatever reason. As soon as some new person also swipes right on that active dating app user, the algorithm assumes the new person “also” dislikes the Jewish user’s profile, by the definition of collaborative filtering. So the new person never sees the Jewish profile.

If you want to know the details of the algorithm, you can play this game! Yaaay gaming!
