Welcome to the twelfth post in a series of articles on writing, publishing and marketing your next book.

Here are the other blogs in the series

In case you didn’t know, there is such a thing as an author’s community, where authors meet and talk about things that affect them, exchange ideas, and network.

There are various online network platforms for authors to meet and connect. Some of them are physical book clubs like The Nonfiction Authors Association, and some of them are virtual such as Writerscafe and Amazon KDP Community.

If you are a very introverted writer, there is the possibility that you would shy away from networking with other writers like you. But if you think about the potential benefits it could bring you, you might want to reconsider, and step out of your shell, for the sake of promoting your art.

Let us look at some of these benefits, shall we?

Encouragement

Encouragement is a very strong thing, and it does wonders to the ego. A kind word here and another one there can change the way a person looks at things completely.

Think about this, if you are having a bad day, and someone says something kind about your outfit. Think about the beautiful smile that would light your face up and your entire day in fact.

Now, imagine if such a kind word is said about your work, something that you have been spending a lot of time on. It would give you some boost, is that not right?

Associating with a group of authors like yourself that understand the struggle, and know what it is like could offer you some manner of comfort, knowing there are people that would offer you the encouragement you need to go on when you are having a hard time with carrying on with your art.

It is like having a support group for that part of your life. If you ask people that belong to one, they would tell you just how much peace they get after discussing their challenges with like minds and finding a solution to whatever challenges they might be facing.

A problem shared they say, is a problem half solved. With an author’s community, you can discuss freely your problems, and you can be sure that someone there has faced something similar, and would have a word of advice for you.

Shared Knowledge

Talking to like minds sharpens your creativity and increases your knowledge base. The reason why is quite easy.

When you interact with people in an author’s community, you will find more experienced people you can learn from, and while you discuss, you pick up a few things that will aid your writing process.

It is a tested and trusted fact that talking with intelligent people like yourself flexes your brain, makes you think deeper, makes you see things from a different angle, and your general take on things would be different. Seat with people like you, rub minds, and learn one or two things from their experiences, while they also learn from you. No knowledge goes to waste. You never know, from one of those intelligent conversations, you can get the inspiration to start a masterpiece.

You can also discuss an idea with them, especially if you are finding it difficult to work on it alone. What is being insinuated here is that if you find yourself in a fix or a mental block, being a part of an authors’ community can help in that regard. You can find people to pull you out of your block, and work through your issues.
