Computer Vision
Computer Vision is a field of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers and systems to derive meaningful information from digital images, videos, and other visual inputs12. It uses machine learning, deep learning, and a type of neural network called a convolutional neural network (CNN) to analyze data and ultimately recognize images1.
Much like human vision, computer vision attempts to interpret and understand visual data. However, unlike humans who have lifetimes of context to train their vision, computer vision has to accomplish this in much less time using cameras, data, and algorithms1.
The goal is to train machines to perform functions such as distinguishing objects, determining their distance, detecting if they are moving, and identifying any anomalies in an image1. This technology is used in various industries ranging from energy and utilities to manufacturing and automotive1.
In essence, if AI enables computers to think, computer vision enables them to see, observe, and understand12.
