If you are concerned about your laptop not getting a strong wireless signal, you can use several methods to boost its internal Wi-Fi antenna. First, be sure to install the latest drivers for your laptop’s wireless adapter. Visit the manufacturer’s website for your laptop and download the new drivers on on it. Also, invest in a Wi-Fi range extender antenna for the wireless router that you use in home to help increase the range of your wireless network. Outdated firmware can weaken the strength of your laptop’s wireless signal reception and prevent you from making a successful Internet connection.

Instructions:

Step 1:

Go to the manufacturer’s website for your laptop computer. Download and install the latest drivers for your wireless adapter card. After you have installed the new drivers on your laptop, right-click on the “Computer” icon on your desktop and select “Properties” from the drop-down menu list.

Step 2:

Click on the “System protection” hyperlink from the left pane. Press the “Hardware” tab button. Click on the “Device Manager” button. Scroll down the list and click on the little arrow next to “Network Adapters.” Find the name of your wireless network adapter and then right on it.

Step 3:

Select “Properties” from the drop-down menu list. Press the “Power Management” tab button. Adjust the settings to disable power management, or increase the amount of power that your wireless network card uses. Click the “OK” button when you’re done.

Step 4:

Test your laptop computer’s wireless signal strength. Click on the “Network” icon on your taskbar. Click on the name of a wireless network that you want to use to establish a wireless Internet connection.

Step 5:

Open your Web browser on your laptop and type the URL address of a website in the navigation text box. Click on the “Search” button. While the Web page is loading on your Web browser, click on the “Network” icon on your taskbar again. Hover your mouse over the wireless network’s signal strength bars. A small pop up box will appear on your desktop indicating the signal strength for the wireless Internet connection.

Tips:

Place your wireless router in a different location and high on a shelf to help boost the Wi-Fi signal reception. Changing the position of the wireless router can increase the Wi-Fi signal reception on your laptop computer. Avoid placing your wireless router near walls and other obstructions that can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal on your laptop. If your laptop’s internal Wi-Fi antenna is still unable to get a better wireless signal after adjusting the settings and changing the position of your wireless router, consider purchasing a new one. Many of the latest 802.11n based wireless routers have dual-band transmission and speeds greater than 450 Mbps.
