Until now, everyone has been focused on cloud computing, fog computing, and edge computing. Today, we would like to introduce you to a new computing model being labeled as Mist computing.

Mist computing is the result of everything computing everywhere. That’s exactly how Computes works. Computes nodes on the edge, in the fog, and in the cloud all work in concert together as a single decentralized and distributed mesh computer. Computes’ Lattice manages routing computations to the right node, at the right time, in the right location (typically as close to the source of the data as possible).

The computing model comparison chart below is courtesy of Yogesh Malik’s recent mist computing blog post. It does a great job identifying the pros and cons of each model. Notice that Mist computing does not have any cons to list. This is because it’s using the best computing model for the best computations every time.

Imagine running a network of computer vision cameras with real-time machine learning processing on hardware. You could use Computes to distribute live video streams to other camera nodes on our private mesh computer. Nodes with static video frames could help other nodes with moving frames compute machine learning algorithms looking for person counts, activities, weapons, etc. If a weapon is detected, for instance, Computes could start forwarding frames to nodes in the cloud where facial recognition databases are present to identify suspects in the live video stream. Cloud nodes could also start dispatching security and police/MPs as well as notifying people about the present threat of danger.

Here’s a short video explaining the evolution from edge to cloud to fog and back to edge — and now MIST.
