Mobile Computing devices, their Operating Systems and Networks

Mobile computing devices refers to a variety of devices that allow people to access data and information from where ever they are, whether they are constantly moving or standing. These are therefore smaller and lighter than desktop and laptop systems.

There can be different kinds of mobile computing devices, some of them uses the integrated hardware keyboard like in Nokia mobile while many of them as today have the touch-sensitive screen that acts as both input and output.

Nowadays, two major types of mobile devices available are smartphones and tablets.

Smartphones

We can say that smartphones are the combination cellphones and handheld computers that created the greatest technology revolution since the Internet. A smartphone can do everything a personal computer can do, and because of its mobility, processing power and much more. These are like tiny computers that can copy, move and share data.

Most smartphones have enough processing power that allow us to play games, edit text documents and spreadsheets, read books, listen to music, and do many other computing tasks even when we are moving.

The best way to categorize smartphones is by their Operating system. Based on the operating system, the smartphones can be divided in major three types which are following.

  • Apple iOS made by Apple, which is used by iPhones and iPads. This OS is available only on Apple hardware; it does not run on any third-party devices.
  • Androids OS designed by Google which is a variant of Linux but for mobile devices. Many lower-cost phones and tablets employ the free and open source Android OS.
  • Windows Phones designed by Microsoft, is a mobile-device version of Microsoft Windows. A windows based tablet is known as Windows 10 mobile.

Tablets

A tablet is same as smartphones but with the large screen and having no cellphone capability.

Nowadays tablets are available that have cellphone capability within them and they are known to be Phablets.

In simple words, a tablet lies between the Laptop and smartphone. The iPad is the world’s most popular tablet, using the same iOS operating system as the iPhone. Others tablets like Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Tab and many more use the Android Operating system.

Networks

When two or more computers are connected via any media so that they can communicate with each other, is known to be a network. The media can be wire or wireless and the communication can be any information transferring among them.

There are basically two kinds of networks an they depend on the size and location.

A local area network (LAN) connects computers in a single physical location, such as a school, office, or building.

A wide area network (WAN) is the combination of two or more LANs.

In a wired connection, Computers are connected through wires, cables and other devices like switches and routers while in a wireless connection, Computers are connected via a radio link and the devices produces radio waves that are known as Wireless Access Point (WAP).

When there are different WANs with different geographical regions and they connect with each other through a series of wires, as a result they form a remote network or simply called the Internet . Other examples of remote networks are school or office networks that enable you to connect to them from home.
