Art: arguably the biggest 3 letter word you will ever come across. Big, in the way it makes its presence felt or lack thereof; Big, in the way it holds the power to emphatically shift our perspectives and Big, is the number of times we fail to notice it.

We encounter art so many times throughout the day without us even recognizing it: From the infinite social media posts of pictures of pets, pillows and food to the various advertisements; to even the piece of paper you wrote poetry on in your younger years and just rediscovered during cleaning.

And we can say the same thing about the art of reading (yes, reading!). The fact that many of you might have been surprised at the notion of reading being an art form, justifies my case.

One of the many things that we don’t pay attention to while reading is that we don’t realize how it is influencing us.

Reading is similar to feeding our body. When we read we give nutrition to our mind to be more logical, mature and confident.

For a beginner, the most often cited tips are:

  • Try different genres, writers and topics to find out your space and interest.
  • Read daily. Read anything but daily. If you don’t feel like reading a book then read a magazine or a newspaper. But, read.
  • Read whatever you find interesting and informative.
  • Share it with your friends or family members. This will also help you to connect with them and have a positive conversation.
  • If you are reading and side by side marking words or sentences that interest you, it is a good sign. This shows that you are inclined to learn more and slowly you’re finding your area of interest.

What one must know is that those who read know what they want to be and where they want to be because Dr Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

In conversation with an undergraduate student about his reading journey so far, this is what he had to say-

“When I started reading it was not an easy job. I started because I’d known for a long time that reciting some words is easier than getting to know what’s hidden behind those words. That’s what draws me towards reading. I read in different contexts, from short stories to news and from novels to magazines. All this has helped me to be more aware of my surroundings, people I interact with and gaining confidence over my thoughts.”

While reading, you will always come out knowing more than you did earlier. It helps us understand that we all need to accept everyone and everything as they are. Reading not only gives you peace of mind but also enhances your vocabulary. You even get to know about various languages and cultures.

Reading is not bound by any single genre. You can read insurmountable topics and find a place which suits you and gives you peace of mind. Nor is it limited to going through novels or famous authors. You can also develop reading habits by reading journals, newspapers, magazines, etc.

Once you truly experience the art of reading, it’s hard to stop yourself from experiencing something so amazing. It becomes a kind of addiction when you start discovering yourself, your favourite genres and interests.

There are various communities and groups for bibliophiles to connect with each other like Bookom. These communities help them to come together and discuss their reading journeys so far.

Art of reading is an ideal art for avid readers and one should definitely practice it.
