Have you lost your will to design?

Being a creative designer seems like a fun and interesting job because most people think you get to work on interesting projects all the time.

The truth is that a lot of the time I’m doing “bread & butter” projects. These projects are important in sustaining a design business but in all honesty these projects are usually small, un-challenging and un-inspiring.

Rather than getting my creative juices flowing, these projects tend to dry them up and I have to ask myself “Have I lost my will to design?”

As a designer, I want to work on something new, exciting and bigger, not these mundane small projects but only recently whilst facing a multitude of these small projects that I realised…

“These small projects are actually not the problem….I am the problem.”

Rather than looking at these projects as monotonous or repetitive, I should be looking to inject my creativity into them, after all that’s my job.

Look for the creativity, make it unique or make it work better, do something different and essentially over deliver.

These small projects are usually just that, small projects with little expectations but by looking at projects in a different light and freeing my creativity a little, these small projects can become favourite portfolio pieces.

I regained my will to design on these small projects and if you’re losing the will to design then you can do the same. Look for the creativity in a project as well as within yourself and over deliver.

You’ll be a better designer for doing so.
