Update: The DevX Initiative is no longer affiliated with Concordium. Please see the medium blog post for more details.

Empowerment in Praxis

The DevX Initiative was born from a desire to give and to contribute without the burden of quid pro quo. It takes its ethos from the core goal of the Rust project, which was expressed at RustConf 2020. The new mantra, which the was shared in that keynote speech, describes Rust as “A programming language empowering everyone to build reliable and efficient software”. The DevX Initiative aims to be a part of this endeavour. We believe in empowering the Rust ecosystem and meeting individuals in their already active spaces.

This roadmap is us charting our course over the next 2 years and sharing how the DevX Initiative will participate and become a part of the Rust community.

The Road Ahead

The roadmap outlines the community events that the DevX Initiative will bring to life, supported by the Concordium Foundation. These events are a mixture of workshops and meetup forums that serve a broad spectrum of interest in the Rust Ecosystem. Below is a quick teaser of some of the key highlight the events will have to offer.

The Rust Cryptography Interest Group (RCIG)

The Rust Cryptography community is one of the most important and interesting subsets of the Rust ecosystem, with incredible work being done by various projects and individuals to ensure that Developers can utilise the unique differentiators Rust as a core language has to offer. The DevX Initiative has come together with Tony Arcieri and Prof Diego Aranha to reignite the Rust Cryptography Interest Group. The RCIG has begun to host monthly sync-up calls, which focuses on bringing together those from across the spectrum working on improving the state of cryptography in Rust.

The Ferris Commit Club

The Ferris Commit club is one of the most important ways the DevX Initiative encourages Rust developers to contribute code to crates. The Ferris Commit Club serves as a learning group and have to overcome the imposter syndrome many people feel. Developers can discuss and dissect pull requests to exciting upcoming features and find a place to build their confidence.

The Blue Sky Conversations

The Blue Sky Conversations will be a podcast that focuses on crafting a dialogue between Rust Developers and the people they aspire to build for. The BSC aims to explore the hype and potential of a range of emerging technologies that are touted as the pillars of our current industrial evolution. These include Machine Learning, Blockchain, Robotics and AR/VR/XR. This will be a discussion between developers (the disruptors) and guests from various creative backgrounds (the disrupted), exploring use-cases and forming a sort of user story exercise in the form of a Podcast. The BSC will also touch on specific topics relating to the life of a Developer in all its facets.

The DevX Rustaceans Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces

The DevX Initiative will create a new space for conversation and interaction in the wider Rust community by hosting a quarterly space on Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces for general, open discourse about the Rust Community and Ecosystem.

The events outlined above showcase what the DevX Initiative aims to achieve for 2021. As the year continues to unfold, we aim to build on the momentum generated and contribute in various ways with workshops and learning resources such as the Frontend Wasm Workshop, The DevX Game Jam, and most importantly, the DevX Sponsorship and Grants program. One of the most crucial ways to support the Rust Ecosystem is through our Sponsorship and Grants. We will be taking direction from prominent members of the Rust community in the form of an advisory board and will release the details in the coming months.
