I like to consider myself a respected and respectful person. Throughout my almost 40 years on this planet, I’ve tried extra hard to always do the right thing and strive to be if not the best, close to it, at everything I’ve attempted. I was a great student — always on the high honor roll throughout middle school and high school. As was expected of most Millennials, I went to college and got a 4-year degree in a major I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life, but did it anyways.

Working in the nonprofit and social work sector for the next 20 years taught me a lot about human nature and the overall unfairness of the world. While working in the field, you learn quickly that even though you think you are making a difference in the lives of those you serve, that sometimes the system will fail those you are trying to help.

The truth is human services is a tireless and thankless profession. Workers put their heart and soul into their work everyday, with very little reward or notice. Even if/when we help a family or person, it often comes with the disheartening truth that they likely won’t be okay for very long.
