The Superman Pose
Hello Readers!
In the past few days, I have begun my primary research into building self-confidence in the workplace. Currently, I work as an administrative assistant in the office of a cleaning company. I manage a variety of tasks in my workplace, from payroll to inventory management, to assisting with employee scheduling. I work under two bosses, the president of the company and our customer service manager. I typically report to the customer service manager more so than to the President. However, in the instances in which the customer service manager is out of the office, I need to approach the President directly with my ideas or questions. This is typically very nerve wracking for me to do, as I don’t want to embarrass myself or ask silly questions.
I recently needed to ask the President an important question during the work day, and had spent much of the day putting off doing so. Finally, several hours into the day already, I decided to buck up and approach my boss. To inspire confidence before approaching her, I decided to attempt the “Superman pose”. The Superman pose is a fairly simple thing to practice. It merely involves putting one fists on their hips, sticking their chest out and head back, and taking a few deep breaths, mimicking Superman in the movies and comics. The Superman pose is thought to be a power pose, inspiring confidence in the person doing so. In my experience, the Superman pose did help me feel a bit more confident in approaching my boss; made me feel a little less nervous. However, this example was not an extremely important scenario; it was not an interview or big presentation. I am not sure if the Superman pose would be as useful in bigger, more stressful events like those. I am unsure if I will have an opportunity to attempt this pose in a bigger scenario anytime soon. For the moment, I will say that the Superman pose is useful.
