Let’s set the record straight: a Vertical Preparation is simply a crown preparation without a defined finish line — so your knife edge, feather edge, or shoulder-less margin.

Horizontal preparations are your defined shoulder or chamfer margins.

Clinicians using horizontal preparations, choose the location of the margin; whereas the lab technician determines the margin location in vertical preparations.

Why do clinicians LOVE vertical preparations?

  • 1. More tooth structure is preserved in crown preparations
  • 2. The final finish line can be finished at various levels, but is often chosen based on gingival tissue information
  • 3. Crown emergence profiles can be modified
  • 4. Increased gingival thickness at the margin
  • 5. Improved coronal seal compared to horizontal preparations
  • 6. Simpler and faster preparations
