Hi, world!
Recently I asked a few questions to Tom - one of our Rust guys!

Who are you, Tom?
Just another dev. I spent some years gaining experience and doing silly enterprise things that no one sane should take seriously. Then I found out about Rust, fell in love, got serious about learning it, and now I work for Confio!

What do you do at Confio?

Annoy people with ideas, pretend to know everything, and then secretly weep in my shower after spending another day trying to understand where those blocks to be chained are. Look, there’s been a serious misunderstanding when I took this job. Oh, and there’s something about writing Tgrade smart contracts, I think. Between us, they’re of average intellect, really.

Could you describe what your work is like at Confio?

I currently work as part of a small team of Rust devs. No one really cares about silly things like keeping track of our time, only about the fruits of our labor. There are meetings, but only ones that make sense to have. Then there’s extra communication and cooperation and discussions as needed. I’d say there’s more spontaneity and freedom than at most workplaces, but maybe that’s just the startup culture.

What have you learned with Confio?

  • Cosmwasm internals - obviously.
  • A lot of blockchain-related stuff. I only had a rough idea of what it was all about before joining.
  • A fair lot about how Wasm is actually structured and how to work with WAT. That was largely by choice - FUN.
  • How smart contracts can be reused and put together to create a larger thing… not unlike microservices? Except with infrastructure you don’t end up hating as much.

What do you like about working at Confio in general?

Flexibility, low bureaucracy, stimulating work in a unique field, the ability to work less than 40 hours a week.

Anything else you want to share with people?

Be kind to yourself. Don’t take life too seriously. Take your time. When you need to cry, do so, but make sure you have something to smile about later. It’s all part of a balanced diet. Oh, work-related? Yeah, I’ve got nothing!
