Exploring Music, Worship and Spiritual Formation — One Student at a Time

Truett Auditorium on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary — Fort Worth, Texas

Welcome to Recapitulations — Reflections on Music, Worship, and Spiritual Formation — a collection of essays, blog posts, and insights from students enrolled in the Ph.D. in Worship and Master of Arts in Worship degree programs in the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Throughout the year, students and faculty members will offer their insights on matters of the church’s song, specific hymns and songs for worship, spiritual formation, and theological issues related to the corporate worship and music of the church. Our goal is to contribute to the ongoing dialogue concerning these issues and offer our thoughts from a biblical and pastoral perspective.

In the Winter 2017 term, our students wrote posts regarding the Music of the Church. These essays explored issues related to congregational song, reflected on individual songs of worship, and studied important collections of congregational song in the Church’s history.

During the Summer 2017 term, our students are taking up the task of Spiritual Formation and Discipleship in the church. They will write a series of essays on individual spiritual disciplines. Next they will reflect on the importance of the Body of Christ and they way in which believers are formed into the Image of Christ as they are in relationship with others. Finally, the students will examine essential biblical passages regarding spiritual formation and will seek to connect these insights with the local church ministry.

The Winter 2018 students are examining Spiritual Formation again, but this time from the individual perspective. They will discuss how to maintain your spiritual walk with Christ during the Advent and Christmas season. They will also take up the task of keeping your faith strong while serving weekly in the local church.

Check back frequently and subscribe to our posts. We hope that we can help our congregations deepen their understanding of God, our calling to worship Him, congregational song, and spiritual formation.
