Ph.D. Seminar in 20th Century Congregational Song: Research Presentations
One of the Spring 2019 Ph.D. seminars studied the music and congregational song of the 20th and 21st centuries. Our Ph.D. students thoroughly examined the various strands of traditions, practices, and developments both in the United States and around the world and did excellent work in researching and discussing the important figures, theological distinctives, and contributions of this era.
The highest honor bestowed by the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada is to be named a Fellow of the Hymn Society. Each student selected a prominent Fellow and studied the person’s background and important contributions to hymnody. Each student gave a 30 minute presentation that provided critical information about the figure, with special emphasis on the most important collections or works by this person. The students provided a comprehensive discussion guide with a biographical section, important contributions, five questions/topics of discussion regarding the topic, and a thorough bibliography consisting of reference works, books, and journal articles.
