Today, Congressmen Lou Correa (CA-46) and Alan Lowenthal (CA-47), joined by Congressman-elect Harley Rouda (CA-48), released the following statement condemning the Trump Administration for announcing their intent to renegotiate the 2008 memorandum of understanding between the United States and Vietnam:

“We are deeply troubled by the Trump Administration’s announced plan to jeopardize the safety and security of Vietnamese war refugees in the United States. The Administration’s actions will create unnecessary confusion and distress for thousands of refugees who fled their war-torn homes and an authoritarian regime following the Vietnam war.

“The United States welcomed these families with open arms and offered them a second chance and the promise of peace. The Administration’s actions abandon these promises and threaten to tear families apart.

“We strongly oppose this Administration’s attempt to strip protections from refugee communities and urge the President to honor the humanitarian spirit and intention embodied in the original agreement. To do otherwise would send thousands of Vietnamese refugees back to a country they fled, placing them and their families in grave danger of reprisal.”
