Lee Gambol: Cleveland Museum of Natural History
As part of our Connected North Content Provider Spotlight Series, we are delighted to highlight Lee Gambol, the distance learning coordinator at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Lee has been one of Connected North’s most sought-after providers for the last five years. Through the Connected North network, she has been delivering interactive and hands-on lab experiences for K-12 students across northern Canada in both the Science and Health domains. Her most commonly requested programs include: the importance of nutrition, the dangers of drugs, dealing with stress, reproductive health including the ups and downs of puberty, and the environmental impact climate change is having on our world. Although Lee’s content is top notch, it is her engaging demonstrations and undeniable humor that has made her stand out in the minds of our students.
Lee’s virtual classroom is set up in an enviable manner; from technology that allows her to zoom in on a real human skull, to life size human anatomy models, all the way to fresh or preserved organs, one might think she has it all. Lee’s expertise in the subject matter coupled with her access to incredible resources makes her an ideal provider for teachers looking to enrich their health and science curriculum.
Lee’s classes always begin with a human element where she creates time to make a connection with the students she is teaching. By using maps to locate each participating class or simply breaking the ice with good natured humour and small talk, Lee adapts her programming in a way that suits each individual class. She also has an uncanny ability to encourage students to open up and share, even with the most uncomfortable of topics. By connecting the material to the everyday lives of students and using her lighthearted positive nature to create a safe learning environment Lee excels in getting the most out of students.
In order to maximize student engagement, Lee often learns about our students’ differing cultural backgrounds, so she can embed her learning into future programming. Despite living in America, she has taken the time to learn the Canadian Food Guide to teach from a Canadian perspective and even taught herself Inuktitut words for the human anatomy, so she can better connect with the classes she visits in Nunavut. Perhaps one of her greatest strengths is her willingness to seamlessly modify her teaching approach on the fly to encourage student participation, even with the shyest of groups! By rewording her questions to allow for participation, using hand gestures, and recognizing the significance of quiet attentiveness, Lee creates an environment that allows all learners to access the material in a manner that best suits their learning needs.
