We Pledge Our Sacred Honor

Its easy for us to sit here today, two hundred and forty-one years later and think the Declaration of Independence isn’t as meaningful to us today as it once was.

And maybe its not, if we don’t live the things that they espoused.

Yet, there seems to always be a theme running through the sometimes-raucous and increasingly irreverent political narrative of our country that I think does hold true to at least some of what the Founding Fathers were trying to get to:

  • “[We] are endowed by [our] Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”
  • “Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.”
  • “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

I hope that, no matter your political beliefs, the amazing thing about being American is that we can not only have them, but we can make them reality in a system that was intended to be for the People, not the powerful.
