Connected Cars and the international consulting group COWI have entered into a joint cooperation. COWI will utilise our rich GPS data derived from more than 100.000 cars to improve their product, City Sense.

Why City Sense came to life?

In both large and small cities congestion on the roads is becoming a problem. As part of a solution, COWI has developed City Sense to help cities become more accessible. It incorporates many different fields and sources working with flows for people, traffic etc. Its traffic measuring system uses Bluetooth signals from mobile phones, GPS navigation devices, and hands-free systems in cars. With City Sense’s traffic-insights Danish road authorities and municipalities are able to see road accessibility and capacity problems as well as how signal systems can be optimized.

Utilising data of connected cars

With our rich real-time and retrospective data of 100.000 cars, City Sense is able to provide even more accurate traffic insight. As a result, it is now more integrated, and it can offer even more solutions that can be better adapted to specific needs. In more details, the newfound data will give insights into various areas:

  • Congestion inventories and travel time measurements
  • Real-time information for road users
  • Purchase statements
  • Identification of hazardous sites on the road network
  • Pre- and post-analyzes
  • Speed analysis on-road sections
  • Analysis of parking-seeking traffic
  • Examination of service levels at intersections

The volume and quality of car data

At Connected Cars we seek to work with innovative partners to create valuable insights based on our large amount of data collected from connected cars. COWI has proven to be such a partner, who doesn’t only talk about big data but also utilises it in a way that creates an impact on our communities’, says Mads Gregersen, CEO.

We collect a large volume of real-time traffic data and we like to visualize it: A snapshot of Danish traffic from 18th of September derived from 61,7 million GPS points

We offer quality data and transparency at the same time; we ensure that data collection fully meets the requirements of the GDPR. The new solutions will in the best way help traffic planners, construction, and operations staff of the Danish state, regions, and municipalities. The new insights create a better basis for important decisions — especially in relation to the green transition of the traffic.
