Data is a main innovation-driver across several industries, and the car industry is no exception. Car data brings new possibilities for solving existing challenges, as well as developing new use cases that increase safety, comfort, and convenience.

Challenge

OSRAM, an international company specializing in lighting solutions, saw the need for a smarter and more efficient way of informing drivers about the status of their headlights at the right time, to keep them safe on the road.

A technology frontrunner, OSRAM recognized the potential and value of car data and reached out to Connected Cars to explore new connectivity opportunities.

Working with Connected Cars on this project, I’ve learned how they work with big data to develop tools, models and analyses that are 100% based on data from cars.

To be able to use and work with data hands-on has taught me and the OSRAM team a lot about the complexities and mechanisms behind data. We have gained knowledge and insights that can be definitely used in the future for other projects.

Solution

The data science team at Connected Cars, together with the team at OSRAM, developed a pilot project whose aim was to build a model that would predict when a driver would need to have their headlights checked and changed. By combining data from 100.000+ cars with OSRAM’s 110+ years of market knowledge and experience, a model was created. It used data mileage and the date the headlights were last changed as cornerstones.

The model was used to generate a campaign that would inform drivers as soon as it was time to check and change their headlights. Using Connected Cars’ network of connected workshops, the campaign was delivered to drivers across Denmark. The built-in marketing platform in the Connected Cars driver app was used to send push notifications to users of the app when it was time to check and change their headlights.

Results

This pilot project is a clear example of how collaboration across industries and countries can be used to develop new use cases and benefit the different parties involved. OSRAM’s commitment to innovation and Connected Cars’ experience in working with big data have contributed to effectively turning data into more safety and convenience for drivers.

Through our collaboration with Connected Cars, we’ve developed a pilot project that enables us to combine safety on the roads through better headlights with data-driven personalized notifications for drivers. This, for us, shows great promise.

Additionally, workshops can provide better service and improve customer experience. In turn, OSRAM can become a preferred vendor for workshops by having taken the lead in developing an innovative, data-based solution in an effort to change the habit of replacing headlights only when they’ve already burned out. Changing headlights prior to burning out is essential to ensuring full visibility and driver safety on the roads.

Overall, the implementation and execution of the pilot project show a successful effort in combining technology, big data, connectivity, and marketing to make mobility safer.
