How to help Ecuador

International media is not providing us the big picture about the disaster that Ecuador is facing after the 7.8 earthquake that hit the country on April 16 and killed more than 600 people. How to help from Chile and abroad? This is what I have found so far.

Update I

Andrea Miño V. has shared this tip for international help: Giveme5forEcuador. Donate five dollars and invite five friends to do the same, sharing a selfie through social media. All donations are being accepted through the international platform Generosity, which guarantees safe handling of the fundraising.

The Ecuador Embassy in Santiago leads a campaign called “Todo Chile ayuda a Ecuador” (Chile helps Ecuador), with the support from Chilean Red Cross, and it has opened a bank account for donations.

On Facebook there is a group called “Plataforma de Ecuatorianos en Chile” (Platform for Ecuatorians in Chile) and they are organizing a meeting for tomorrow Sunday to receive donations like: Batteries, Portable Radios (with batteries included), Big tents with capacity for 8 to 10 people, Lantern (mining type), Canned food and disposable diapers for children and adults. This is the Facebook event.

Chilean Red Cross will also receive donation of basic necessities until tomorrow Sunday. The address: Avenida Santa María 0150, Providencia.

The Ecuador Embassy will also receive donations.

How to donate from other countries

Lack of safe water is a big problem after earthquakes. You can donate money to purchase and distribute water purifiers to victims of the tragedy. Go to this website and read more.

Apple has partnered with the American Red Cross and opened a donation page in iTunes to support relief efforts. They are accepting donations in $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, and $200 denominations.

If you have any more information on how to help Ecuador from distance, please share it with the world.
