In our most recent episode, my co-founder Ray Cao interviews Martine Reardon who is the former CMO of Macy’s, one of the largest publicly traded retailers, valued at over $13 Billion.

Here are the three things I learned from the interview:

  1. Similar to other executives, mornings are her sanctuary. She gets into the office at 6:30 AM on most days to give her some alone time to prepare for the day before getting into meetings starting at 8 AM.
  2. While she’s very impressed with mom’s who are able to balance a rapidly ascending career with growing a family, she decided that not having children was the right choice for her life and career aspirations.
  3. Looking back to her 25 year-old self, her main piece of advice would be to sit back and listen more. This is one of my favorite reminders as it’s something I’ve been trying to focus on for many years. In negotiations, building relationships or just spending time with other people, sitting back and truly listening is a powerful skill that adds tremendous value to others.
