In our most recent episode, my co-founder Ray Cao interviews Vineet Mehra who is the Global President of the Baby Care business for Johnson & Johnson (J&J).

Here are the three things I learned from the interview:

  1. If you have aspirations to run a global company, you need to have global experiences and setup your life in such a way that is conducive to the frequent travel and movement. Vineet has lived in 11 homes in 13 years, and found a life partner that embraces this lifestyle. More impressively, they’ve done this while maintaining a dual-track career — both are senior marketing professionals and continue to build their respective careers despite the constant movement.
  2. Bloom where you’re planted is a good reminder to everyone. Simply put, it means work hard in whatever role you’re placed in. Thinking ahead is important, but sometimes you just need to build your credibility and experience by taking what you’re given and doing an amazing job at it. We cover this quite a bit in an upcoming interview with Javier San Juan (President of L’Oréal Latin America).
  3. You have to flex your habits to your situation. He used to be a nighthawk (like me) but now that he has a family, he is out the door at 6:15 AM to ensure he can spend time with his family in the early evening. There are also trade-offs to running a global organization — he has to plan out his calendar 12 months in advance to make everything work.
