Dear Reader,
“History shows us that nothing prepares the way for tyranny
more than the failure of public officials
to keep the streets safe from bullies and marauders.”
— Barry Goldwater, GOP, 1964
Read the quote? Now, re-read it. Then look up the definition of tyranny because at this point you are probably feeling confused.
After reading the definition, do you feel more confused? I did.
Then I realised Mister Goldwater was deploying an entire arsenal of F.U.D. in one sentence. He tells us what we should fear, he uses an opposite word to create uncertainty, and because he is in a position of authority – we begin to doubt our own interpretation of a truth.
Is this possibly the greatest sentence ever written to coerce people to act in a way that makes all of us worse off?
Maybe. But, there is an equally subversive statement used everyday by authority.
Sandra challenged this statement. The FUD was in the context and tone.
“You look upset. Are you ok?” – Officer presenting warning. (failure to signal when changing lanes.)
She did not heed. Nor should she. Sandra knew what she was being told. Sandra knew it was not a question.
We are complicit in the consequences for Sandra when we don’t challenge these statements everyday.
It’s not enough to be shocked.
