No Children, No Stake in Our Future, No Place in Political Leadership

No, I’m sorry, having a rescue dog will not qualify you, nor will an apartment full of cats. Tearful stories of how you waited too long to try to have kids because you were in graduate school, or how you put your career first won’t cut it.

For those of you thinking of waiting to start a family, I can only suggest you read this. For everyone else, however regrettable, you don’t have the same stake in the future of the West as someone who has had kids, and have no place in politics.

There may (unbelievably!) be one benefit of Macron getting elected. It is suddenly terribly obvious that a West in demographic decline is really picking the wrong leaders to lead them out of this. Now the leaders of Great Britain, Germany and France are all childless. And not only those three.

- Macron, the newly elected French president, has no children.
- German chancellor Angel Merkel has no children.
- British prime minister Theresa May has no children.
- Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni has no children.
- Holland’s Mark Rutte has no children.
- Sweden’s Stefan Löfven has no children.
- Luxembour’s Xavier Bettel has no children.
- Scotland’s Nicola Sturgeon has no children.
- And lastly, Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, has no children.

It is getting noticed.

A ban on people who have not had children from politics in the West may trigger a few snowflakes. I understand.

And we all know (especially in Europe) nice responsible childless people who still care about the future of Europe and the West. But I can’t say they outnumber the number of childless middle-aged folks I meet fixated on their pets. Not a good sign.

There is a chance that we may lose some fine people from potential political rolls. In the U.S., Patrick Buchanan and Ann Coulter don’t have children. Some of the crew at Connor Post haven’t had kids. Some great people. I get it.

By contrast, every single leader on that list of childless European leaders above has ranged from mediocre to terrible. We’re talking really bad leadership. The kind of monumental folly that we associate with the great wars. Really bad leadership.

Say it loud. Say it often.
