Last night in Sweden
The world press has once again proved just how stupid Trump is
Trump held a rally in Melbourne, Florida, and apparently he really got it wrong when talking about the problems Europe is facing. Trump told supporters:
“We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden.”
“Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible. You look at what’s happening in Brussels. You look at what’s happening all over the world. Take a look at Nice. Take a look at Paris.”
And the world’s press was quick to come back and point out the sheer stupidity of the statement.
NPR along with some other fine news outlets helpfully clarified exactly what had happened in Sweden
On Friday night — the night in question — a few things did, in fact, happen in Sweden. A Stockholm newspaper helpfully laid out a few of them:
Technical problems threatened to derail a performance by singer Owe Thörnqvist.
Harsh weather in the north of the country shut down a road.
A high-speed chase in Stockholm ended with the driver under arrest.
Aftonbladet listed a few more, to be sure — the trouble is, none of those events fits what Trump implied by including Sweden in a list of places that had recently suffered terrorist attacks.
From the tone and tenor of the reporting, it wasn’t clear whether he misspoke because he’s so stupid, or willfully hoped to mislead people about an event in Sweden, implying Sweden has real problems. I mean everyone knows how safe and friendly and safe Sweden is, right? … Right?!!!!
And while the MSM were playing gotcha, and showing how smart they are, they were cleverly avoiding the elephant in the room –– all the problems Europe is facing in Brussels, in Nice, in Paris, and …. Sweden!
Fortunately there are a few news outlets that willing to report on what’s really happening in Sweden on a daily basis, instead of trying to play gotcha with Trump.
P.S. And far from being news to the Swedes themselves, it is one reason the polling firms Sentio and YouGov have had the anti-mass-migration Sweden Democrats polling as the largest party in Sweden since October 2015. Another curiously underreported fact in the MSM.
