Art: Contemplation and Solving Artistic Problems

Art is a result of contemplation by the artist. Artists solve artistic problems — and new artworks are a result. These are two claims — by Michael Oakeshott and Karl Popper, respectively — which I have recently affirmed. However, if you think very long about them, they seem to be in conflict with each other. We don’t typically think of the contemplative life as being concerned with problem-solving…
