Line by Line: How Poems are Built

When you hear the word “poetry” — or “song,” for that matter — especially in relation to other kinds of literature, you probably think of the fact that poems and songs are divided into lines. This division into lines is true of all songs and poems in all cultures. If there is anything that is a cultural universal, it is surely the poetic line. That should strike you as a bit strange. Why on earth would there be an art involving language being broken into lines? Why is poetry a cultural universal?
