There’s only one thing you need to know to be a mathematician: math. Math is a precise approximation of reality, but doesn’t always deal with reality. Mathematics is the purest of pure abstraction, and it demonstrates relationships.

Physicists have to know both math and physics.

Chemists have to know chemistry and physics and math.
