The peacock display drove Charles Darwin to distraction. His theory of natural selection seemed to do a good job of explaining why animals got taller, faster, and stronger, but there were things — like the long display feathers of peacocks — that seemed to be a real slap in the face of natural selection. After all, natural selection would seem to discourage long, showy display feathers — the length is bulky and makes peacocks poor fliers at best…
