Episode 2: Hong Kong’s Crypto Regulatory Landscape

Brian W Tang, Founder of ACMI and LITE Lab@HK, shares with Joyce Lai how Hong Kong, as one of the top three IPO destinations of the world, is continuing to innovate to be internationally competitive as a global capital-raising center while protecting investors. Brian also sheds light on the relevance of the recent Alibaba listing in Hong Kong and also Hong Kong’s “one country, two systems” framework.

In this episode, Joyce and Brian discuss:

  • Hong Kong’s historical context and growth into one of the top three IPO destinations in the world. The fact that the vast majority of the companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange are based overseas adds further considerations to its regulators seeking to protect investors.
  • At the same time, competition between international financial centers exist, which requires them to be innovative.
  • Hong Kong’s SFC announced a new regulatory sandbox for virtual asset platform operators in November 2018 as a new inventive way to seek to co-create a workable regulatory framework for crypto-exchanges.
  • Brian also explains how the internet startups in China evolved differed from those from Silicon Valley, and why many of the former moved faster into fintech due to micro-payments.
  • Recommended Reading from Brian: FATF Interpretive Note in relation to Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).
