Businesses enforce working from home, conferences are postponed, flights are cancelled, schools are closed, storefronts and restaurants shut their doors and people are quarantined at home. Consumers are looking for different ways to manage their lives while in lockdown, and in some cases, apps could provide the perfect solution.
In fact, people spent 20% more time using apps in the first quarter of 2020 compared to 2019. During that time, consumers also spent over $23 billion in app stores — the largest spend per quarter recorded to date.
While consumers across the globe lean on apps to support them in times of crisis, how exactly are consumers in the world interacting with apps?
Winners emerging from the crisis
One of the major trends we witness in the app economy was the surge of usage in business and educational apps in China, and then across the world. Following the closure of cities and the introduction of work from home and social distancing policies, downloads and time spent in these apps skyrocket.
Given the huge volume of people working remotely, it’s no surprise to see video chat and online conference apps experiencing explosive growth.
Video conferencing app Zoom expanded its worldwide user base by 300% in just under a month, becoming the popular platform for virtual conferences and festivals. Despite Zoom’s recent data privacy and security scandal, the tremendous growth is showing no signs of slowing down.
Downloads of gaming applications have also increased as users are turning to mobile games to stay entertained and pass the time while under quarantine. Alongside gaming, social media and video streaming apps usage soar as people want to be entertained and communicate with loved ones while avoiding physical contacts. Other than Instagram and Twitter, Tik Tok is a popular app for mobile users to watch and create short looping videos and social network with others in efforts to attract viewers.
There is also an increase in engagement for food and grocery delivery apps as more consumers are looking to consume their meals at the comfort of their home. Do expect to see an increase in food and grocery delivery apps as more countries impose mandatory quarantines and extend social distancing policies in the weeks to come.
Victims of the global pandemic
Despite the app economy boom in the current market, not all apps got on the speed train. Travel and hospitality app downloads suffered as the virus outbreak is not conducive to globetrotting. Examples of these apps include airlines and hospitality sectors.
Airbnb has experienced a drastic decline in bookings and is adopting new cleaning protocols in an attempt to appease and induce confidence in both hosts and guests. The tech company has since lowered its internal evaluation, from $31 billion to $26 billion, which is not a positive sign for a company planning to go public this year.
Ride-hailing and transportation apps around the world such as Uber also suffered from staying home restrictions. Users are more cautious when commuting around and many avoid leaving home safety reasons. The largest impact on downloads of top ride-sharing apps appeared in China, with weekly downloads for their version of Uber, DIDI falling 75% from the highest week to its lowest week. However, this downfall is predicted to be short term and ride-hailing apps will recover as soon as government regulators lift their restrictions.

Despite the gains, many users didn’t trust their social media platforms for critical news related to COVID-19. Social media platforms were only considered trustworthy and credible by a minority of users. Technology is becoming an increasingly controversial topic.
