Telegram’s development with their blockchain project is over after the SEC shut down sales of GRAM. 美国证交会拒绝了GRAM代币销售之后，电报的区块链项目的开发将会结束。
TON was the next big cryptocurrency of Telegram, one of the biggest messaging apps in the world. TON was a blockchain platform designed to offer cryptocurrency to anyone with a smartphone, just like Facebook’s Libra project.
However, after years of dispute with the SEC, Telegram is finally calling it quits on Telegram Open Network. This decentralised network is created to allow for an open, free, decentralized exchange of value and ideas. TON had the potential to revolutionize how people store and transfer funds and information. Due to the SEC’s ruling, Telegram’s active involvement with TON will be over.
SEC ordered Telegram to cancel sales of its cryptocurrency GRAM, after failing to register an early sale of $1.7 billion in tokens prior to launching the network. The funds were raised in pre-ICO offerings back in 2018, though the company ended up cancelling the much-hyped ICO due to increased SEC scrutiny.
New York’s Southern District court declared that GRAM couldn’t be distributed in the United States. The judge ruled that U.S. citizens might find some way of accessing the TON platform after it launched, so the platform couldn’t be allowed either. Keeping the project alive would be difficult now because it meant a legal headache for Telegram to make sure no Americans would ever be involved in transactions on the platform.
Telegram tabled two options to refund all investors who invested $1.7 billion into the Telegram Open Network back in 2018:
- Receive 72% of their investment immediately
- Loan the invested amount to Telegram for a year, then be paid in cash. Initially, a refund in cryptocurrency was an option but it was removed after SEC interference.
Telegram’s founder, Durov spoke out against the ruling in his announcement, arguing that American courts shouldn’t have the power to stop the sale of cryptocurrency beyond US borders, and he urged others to take up the decentralisation fight in Telegram’s stead. “This battle may well be the most important battle of our generation,” he wrote. “We hope that you succeed where we have failed.”
