“Was she at peace?” I ask as I embrace our music director, who has just lost a beloved grandmother. “Yes.” she replies. “God bless you and your family” is all I can think of to say.

When I came to rehearsal this evening, I was a bit surprised to see her. I thought she might hand off responsibility to her second in command. But no. Music is healing. Few know that better than those who perform.

She is visibly biting back tears as she begins our first number of the evening, a gentle piece we often use to open concerts.

The song begins with a soprano solo, which gives way to the women’s voices joining in, beginning in unison then splitting into harmony. When that happens it is as if a gentle rain begins to fall, healing water exclusively for her, rinsing away her sorrow.

In her body language I can see the weight slide off her shoulders, falling to the floor, releasing her from her sorrowful burden.
