Michelle Obama is not focused on Donald Trump and will not attend his second inauguration. January 20 is Trump’s victory day, but it is also a national holiday — Dr. Martin Luther King Day. Like Michelle, I will not focus on the President-elect. I will attend a January 20 brunch to honor Martin Luther King and to “celebrate” the new President.

I invited other members of the 92% to join me. We will support each other while discussing how to get through the next four years gracefully. I will sit out of Trump stuff, minding my own business. I plan to pass on to our young Black people that we are a minority in America and will be a minority here forever, but there is a way to thrive.

Our family history is the same as most American African Americans. It is one of survival. There was slavery, the dark times of reconstruction, the Jim Crowe South, escaping to the North from sharecropping, systemic racism, then working our asses off to pull ourselves up by our non-existent bootstraps.

My family was luckier than most. We have a math and science gene and use it to climb the ladder of success. There is a proliferation of engineers, accountants, and scientists who are all graduating and helping other family members graduate.
