Taking care of yourself is not selfish, it’s necessary for your vitality. As your children grow, they’ll benefit from your role modeling and learn to better care for themselves. They will learn your needs aren’t so different. Parents and children alike need sleep, nutrition and exercise to feel their best. Beyond physical needs, mind and spirit need nourishment, too.

Depending on your child’s age and temperament, they may be able to participate in some of the following activities with you. During certain phases of development, children mimic the adults in their life. They’re always watching. Learning to fulfill their own needs will empower children to be more independent.

It’s also important for parents to practice self care independently of children sometimes. Experiment with what works for your unique family. When can you enjoy time alone or what can you change to make time for yourself? Build routines to include your favorite body, mind and spirit practices.

Prioritize sleep and rest

  • Establish and practice evening and morning routines for each family member. Adjust children’s sleep and wake times according to recommendations for their age and your own intuition.
