The Colors of Life
A quadrille
Colored day, colored life
Nothing black and white
Dreamy sunrise, breathless sunsets
Water blues, storm cloud indigo
Flowered meadows, autumn leaves
Dragonflies and mountain greens
Yellow corn and sunshine gleam
Rainbows, surely, only briefly
Reminding to embrace us, chiefly
Only open eyes see color.
The quadrille as a poetic form is comprised of 44 words. Based on the European contradance form from the late 18th-early 19th century, and still danced today in small dance communities throughout North America, and occasionally beyond.
This poem was written during a quadrille poetry writing workshop sponsored by the Garden of Neuro Institute, an incubator space for women’s voice, agency and leadership.
