Quality time with our amazing selves is one of the greatest gifts we can give our romantic partners. The opposite is also true: The gift of space is as important as time together. It can feel scary to give our partners, and ourselves, room to grow as individuals. We may fear the distance will be too ambiguous and humans naturally feel apprehension about the unknown. However, when we thrive independently we are more available to grow closer to each other.

With my heart fluttering, I was more emotional than logical

Early in our relationship, I wanted to spend a lot of time with the person who became my partner. Too much time to be sustainable. The newness and strong feelings were so compelling it was easy to overlook other areas of my life. I wanted to put off friends, family, self-care, and other interests anytime he called or invited me out. This may be familiar to those of you who have fallen in love. With my heart fluttering, I was more emotional than logical.
